Underbrushing · Whitewater, WI

Clear the Understory, Keep the Canopy

Underbrushing clears the understory: the brush, saplings and small trees crowding the ground beneath mature trees you want to keep. You may also hear it called underbrush clearing. The big trees stay, and the thicket under them comes out. We do this work around Whitewater, Lake Geneva and Elkhorn, and across southern Wisconsin. The Wisconsin DNR says common buckthorn invades oak forests. It grows as a tall understory shrub or small tree, up to 20 to 25 feet. Its dense shade stops tree seedlings and understory plants from coming up. Bush honeysuckle invades open woods and forest edges, and it changes them by cutting the light. Underbrushing takes that layer out so light reaches the forest floor again.

Our forestry mulcher does the work. It grinds brush and saplings where they stand, in one pass. Before it starts, we agree with you on the keepers, young trees included. You decide how much comes out: a few lanes or the full understory. Then the machine works between the trunks. The understory comes down to the ground, and the canopy overhead is left alone. The mulch stays where it falls, spread as a layer over the forest floor. When we finish, you can see deep into your woods and walk between the big trees. Their shade and spacing stay the same. What changes is the ground beneath them, which goes from thicket to an open, mulched floor.

Two things shape underbrushing here: oaks and lakes. Underbrushing puts the mulcher among the trunks, so in oak woods, oak wilt sets the calendar. The Wisconsin DNR says the risk of spreading it peaks April through July. In those months, sap-feeding beetles carry the spores to fresh wounds. So oak woods are best underbrushed in the other months of the year. Lakeshores are among the places bush honeysuckle invades, the DNR says. But near the water, shoreland rules decide what comes out. County shoreland ordinances keep a vegetative buffer at least 35 feet inland from the ordinary high water mark. Check with your county before any work in that strip. Every job starts with a free on-site estimate, where we look at your woods with you.

What to Look for in a Underbrushing Company

Care around the keeper trees

Underbrushing is judged by what is still standing when the crew leaves. Look for a company that marks the keepers with you first and works the mulcher between their trunks.

They know the invasives on sight

Good underbrush clearing takes the buckthorn and bush honeysuckle and spares the young trees worth keeping. That needs a crew that can tell them apart. One tell: buckthorn leaves stay green into fall.

They plan around oak wilt

Ask when a company will work under your oaks. Oak wilt spreads most in April through July, the Wisconsin DNR says. A crew that knows Wisconsin oaks schedules around those months.

A finished forest floor

The mulch should lie spread between the trunks, with the understory ground down to the floor. Ask how your woods will look the day the machine leaves.

Free, price-matched estimates

The estimate should be free and given on site, after someone has seen your woods. Ours is, and our price-match guarantee stands behind the number we give you.

FAQ

Underbrushing — Common Questions

Questions about underbrushing in Whitewater or across southern Wisconsin? Here are the ones we hear most — and we’re glad to talk through yours.

What is underbrushing?
Underbrushing means clearing the brush and small trees under a canopy of mature trees, while those trees stay standing. It also goes by underbrush removal. We do it with forestry mulching: the mulcher works between the trunks and leaves the mulch on the ground.
How is underbrushing different from brush clearing?
Underbrushing works under a canopy you keep, while brush clearing takes on open brush, thickets and field edges. Under a canopy, the mulcher threads between trunks and works around the trees that stay. If your land has both, one free on-site estimate covers the two.
How much does underbrushing cost?
It depends on how thick the understory is and how many trunks the mulcher has to work around. We set the price once we have seen your woods. The on-site estimate is free, and our price-match guarantee backs it. Underbrushing is mulcher work, so see our guide to what forestry mulching costs per acre in Wisconsin.
What time of year is best for underbrushing oak woods?
Any time outside April through July. The Wisconsin DNR puts the greatest oak wilt risk in those months, when sap-feeding beetles carry spores to fresh wounds. Fall is a good window, since buckthorn leaves stay green into fall and are easier to spot.
Can you underbrush a lake lot near the water?
Yes, within the shoreland rules. Wisconsin's NR 115 requires a vegetative buffer at least 35 feet inland from the ordinary high water mark. A county may allow invasive plants to come out of it, as long as what is removed is replaced by replanting. Access and viewing corridors are capped at the lesser of 30 percent of the frontage or 200 feet combined. Check with your county, and see our land clearing permit guide.
Does underbrushing take out buckthorn and honeysuckle?
Yes. The mulcher grinds buckthorn and bush honeysuckle where they stand, along with the rest of the understory. Wisconsin classifies common buckthorn as a Restricted invasive. Clearing a solid stand, and keeping it from coming back, is covered on our buckthorn removal page.
Will the big trees stay standing?
Yes. Underbrushing takes out only the layer beneath the canopy, and the mature trees are the reason for the job. You tell us which trees stay, and the mulcher works around them. If you want an area cleared, trees and all, that is land clearing, a different job.
