Land clearing in Caledonia means working a village with about 45 square miles of land. Franksville sits inside it, along with the neighborhood of Husher and the lakeside community of Tabor. Old woods still stand here. Renak-Polak Maple-Beech Woods, a State Natural Area in Caledonia, is 107 acres of mostly old-growth forest. Sugar maple, basswood and beech dominate its nearly level ground. The DNR notes that where elms died in its wetter woods, shrubs took over the openings. Brush comes back the same way on a private woodlot once the canopy opens up. The DNR also lists oak woods and river woods among the places buckthorn invades.
Forestry mulching handles most of that regrowth in one pass. A purpose-built mulcher grinds brush, saplings and small to mid trees where they stand. The mulch stays on the ground, and larger trees get cut and cleared first. See how forestry mulching works on a Caledonia woodlot. We work across the village, from the Franksville area out to Tabor on the Lake Michigan side. Nearby, we also work in Mount Pleasant and the City of Racine. The rest of the menu is stump grinding, brush clearing, lot clearing and buckthorn removal. Bush hogging keeps fields and pastures open, and rough grading follows once the wood is off.
You might have a wooded lot in Franksville that needs opening before a build. Or you keep acreage out near the Caledonia Greenspace Trail, and the fence lines and trails have closed in. A yard in Husher can have a buckthorn thicket along the back edge, too. Each job starts the same way. We come out, look at what is standing with you, and price the work off that. The estimate is free and happens on site, and our price-match guarantee backs the number. Near a creek or wetland, we look at the village setback rules with you before any cutting starts.

Racine County In Caledonia, the village writes the shoreland rules. Caledonia was a town until 2006. State law makes a village that incorporated after April 30, 1994 enact its own shoreland zoning. That ordinance must hold a shoreland setback area of at least 50 feet from the ordinary high-water mark. Whether your lot faces Lake Michigan in Tabor or an inland creek, check with the village before we cut. Wet ground turns up even in the old woods. Next to Renak-Polak, the Caledonia Conservancy's Short Road Trailhead preserve takes in a wetland and a creek. We keep the mulcher on firm ground near wet spots and leave the mulch down as cover. Buckthorn invades oak woods and river woods, so buckthorn removal in Caledonia woods starts with finding where it has spread. It holds its leaves late into the growing season, so fall is a good time to find it. Oak wilt risk runs from April through July, so oak cutting waits for August through March.
