Racine County Clearing near water here runs on a county rule. Racine County treats the first 35 feet inland from the ordinary high-water mark as a vegetative buffer. That applies in the unincorporated towns of Waterford, Norway and Rochester. Inside the buffer the county allows routine maintenance and a viewing corridor of 35 feet per 100 feet of frontage. Forestry is allowed on parcels holding ten or more wooded acres. Invasive or hazardous plants can come out, and then get replanted in the same spot. Anything past that takes a county permit and an approved plan. We mark the line before a machine moves. Shoreland reaches 1,000 feet back from a lake or flowage and 300 feet from a river. Near Tichigan the wildlife area runs to cattail marsh, wet meadow and lowland shrub. East toward the Wind Lake Canal the flat fields are tile drained. Both get worked when the ground is firm. In the oak woodlots the understory is usually buckthorn and bush honeysuckle. That makes cutting buckthorn and honeysuckle out of a woodlot its own job.
