Waukesha County A few conditions here change how we clear. The edges of Big Muskego Lake are cattail marsh over muck, and muck stays soft under a machine. That work waits for frozen ground or holds back from the soft line. Wetlands here are mapped, and the mapped ones carry their own zoning. The city's conservation subdivision standards also treat everything within 50 feet of the ordinary high-water mark as environmentally sensitive. We plan around those lines before a machine moves. On flat tile drained fields, water stands after a rain, so timing matters more than horsepower. In the oak woods near the wildlife area, buckthorn and bush honeysuckle fill the understory. Both resprout hard from a cut stump. Mulching them low and coming back at the resprouts is how a woodlot gets its floor back. Big Muskego Lake came back clear after the 1995 to 1997 drawdown and carp removal. We keep loose soil where it is, and mulch left on the ground helps do that.
